Natural Body Jewelry Materials
There is a wide range of natural materials that can be used to make body jewelry including wood, gemstone and animal horn. Many people find that wearing natural body jewelry reduces irritation and keeps their piercings feeling healthy. Each material has different properties and benefits but as a rule natural body jewelry is highly biocompatible. These materials are less likely to cause irritation and are recommended for people with metal allergies or who want a change from metal jewelry.
As with any body jewelry material it is important to ensure that these natural materials are ethically obtained. It is entirely possible to create animal horn, wood and bone jewelry in a way that does not harm animals or natural resources. At Body Jewelry Shop we are committed to using only ethically-obtained materials for our natural body jewelry.
Wooden Body Jewelry
Body jewelry can be made from many different types of body jewelry but it is particularly good for wooden flesh plugs, flesh tunnels and other stretching jewelry. Wood is naturally biocompatible but porous, so it is recommended for healed piercings only. It is much less likely to cause irritation than other materials and most people find wooden body jewelry very comfortable to wear.
Wood body jewelry is very lightweight, so it is ideal for chunky body jewelry. It has a soft, smooth feel and can be polished to a very high shine. This means that it is gentle on the skin and cannot "drag" when inserted into stretched piercings. It feels very comfortable and we recommend switching to wooden body jewelry if you have experienced irritation from metal jewellery. Due to the many different varieties of wood, there is a huge choice of colours and styles of wooden body jewellery. Wood makes very attractive flesh plugs and crescents, giving a beautiful finish and a natural feel to all your piercings.
Due to the porous nature of wood we do not recommend that is submerged in water for long periods of time. Normal bathing should not cause any problems. Wood is also sensitive to some chemicals so we do not recommend wearing wooden jewellery whilst swimming in chlorinated pools.
